We started GrowGrows with a very clear mission to not only create super soft, imaginative and practical baby and children’s sleepwear but to do that whilst protecting the planet for the next generation that we ultimately serve.
There’s a lot of ‘greenwashing’, especially in the clothing and fashion industry, where brands claim to be doing good and operating sustainably where in fact, the opposite is true.
We decided we wanted to be accountable and responsible and for our customers to be able to trust what we say we’re doing, what we’re actually doing. To do that, we believe our performance in protecting the environment must be measured and assessed, and by an independent, non-conflicting third-party and that’s where B Corp comes in.
So what is B Corp?
A B Corp, or Benefit Corporation, is a type of for-profit company that seeks to create a positive impact on society and the environment, in addition to generating profit.
B Corps are certified by a third-party organisation, B Lab, based on their performance in areas such as environmental sustainability, employee well-being, community involvement, and corporate governance.
B Corps are required to meet high standards of transparency and accountability, and are legally required to consider the interests of stakeholders beyond just shareholders, including employees, customers, suppliers, and the community. This ensures that B Corps operate in a way that creates value for all stakeholders, not just shareholders.
So is GrowGrows a B Corp already?
Not quite. We’re currently a B Corp Pending organisation meaning we’ve completed a series of early assessments to determine that we’re within the grade of becoming a B Corp but are currently undergoing verification to prove this.
As part of this process we work with B Lab analysts who request us to provide information and documentation as evidence to demonstrate we meet the rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency.
With some luck we should become an official B Corp organisation within 2023. This is something we’re spending a significant amount of time, energy and resource into becoming and something we’ll be super proud of achieving.
